Jagdtiger

The Jagdtiger (Sd.Kfz. Index: Sd.Kfz.186) was the last evolution of German tank destroyers growing progressively heavier and more heavily armed over the years - most notably mobility and gearbox reliability was sorely lacking in many other areas as any extreme concentration in one field tends to cause.

Originally a vague demand to mount a 12.8 cm gun to a self-propelled hull in 1942 and then a Panther or Tiger 1 hull in 1943, the vehicle was manufactured in low numbers from 1944 to 1945 based on the Tiger II Hull instead.   Though the engine was exactly the same as the 19-ton lighter Tiger II, which was already overstressed by its own weight, the 71-ton behemoth was quite unreliable and quite slow to manoeuvre, often breaking down trying to crest even a small mound of dirt.

Frontal armour as thick as that of the Maus presented a tough opponent.   Low production rate, poorly educated crews, and its poor dependability meant that the Jagdtiger was overkill for most circumstances and made little total contribution to the war effort.

Originally shown during the Closed Beta Test for Ground Forces before Update 1.41, the Jagdtigger is most fairly described as "extreme," in both positive and negative terms.   Its frontal armour scheme rivals that of the Maus, a non-trivial feat when you consider the Maus has over 200 mm of raw armour thickness and its 12.8 cm cannon was if anything overkill against any enemy it saw during the war. Stories of its shells straight through a building and penetrating a Sherman being well-known abound.

On hills, the Jagdtiger is rather heavy, most clearly seen since it accelerates slowly and turns especially gently.   Though its weight class, the T95 or Tortoise, makes it hardly a mobile vehicle even if it is not nearly immobile like comparable tank destroyers.   Urban maps show the Jagdtiger as poor since it depends on raw armour and lacks a turret.  It must continually turn around bends revealing its much thinner sides.   This

is also quite vulnerable to chemical rounds; although they might not one-shot your vehicle against even the thickest areas of your armour easily, one penetration is sure to lead to several more which in turn will be fatal.   As a second line supporting vehicle, the Jagdtiger shines; instead of pushing up yourself, sniping from long range or holding corridors for your team.   This reduces any possibility of being pincered or immobilised then flanked and will also mean enemies fight to see you and land a perfect shot on your weak points.
